Wild Flower Vests

2014-08-13-FeatureImage

Make a bright and beautiful vest to commemorate the end of summer! To add some fun to your students’ painting experiences, try painting outside as a tribute to all the great days spent in the sunshine (and to enhance students’ sensory exploration!)

Age: 3+

Duration: 10-20 minutes

Learning Objectives: Exercise fine motor skills with a needle and thread to make stitches, squeezing Squiggle Pipettes to spread paint on Color Diffusing Paper and pasting assorted flowers onto Sew Up Vests.

You’ll Need:

R43006 Sew Up Vests

R15657 Wild Flower Paper Bits

R54460 Squiggle Pipettes

R5601 Plastic Lacing Needles

• R5519 Classroom Bowls

• Paint

• Paint tray

• Yarn

• Glue

Line-07

Sew Up Vests encourage fine motor development through easy sewing techniques using a system of matching holes to ensure that students keep track of their work. Each Sew Up Vests kit is accompanied by a set of Plastic Lacing Needles which are designed to prevent injury with a soft-tip point.

P8120102Here are some of the items you will need. If you are not able to produce watercolors, simply dilute your existing tempera or thick-based paint with three parts water. Mix the colors together to get the watercolor “effect.”

There are 5 parts to your Sew Up Vest: The back vest, the two front panels and two pockets. It is easiest to paint each piece one at a time before moving onto the next piece.

P8120105

Start with the back part of your Sew Up Vest. Dip your Squiggle Pipette into a paint color. Squeeze and release to draw in some of the liquid paint. This is a great exercise in fine motor skills for young children.

P8120113In this step, I first dropped a random arrangement of blue paint onto the back vest. Squeeze the bulb of the Squiggle Pipette to release the paint. Notice between this picture and the next that the color on the vest begins to spread further and further out. This is due to the nature of the Color Diffusing material used to make the Sew Up Vest.

P8120115Next, I added some yellow to mix with the blue. This is a great opportunity to discuss principles of color mixing, as the color literally mixes right before students’ eyes!

P8120117Notice the large patches where the yellow mixes with the blue to make green! It also produces a neat tie-dye effect that children will have fun creating and observing.

P8120118Next, we will work on the two front panels of the vest. I’ve placed them side by side above to make painting easier and conserve workspace. Here, I’ve decided to use the colors yellow, blue and red.

P8120121First, drop a bit of color onto the front panels and watch how they spread. Hint: Try not to use too much color to completely saturate the vest. You want to leave some white space as room for other colors to appear; only the edges of the color groups should mix together to form new colors. Try to keep students from squeezing paint onto areas where paint already exists as this will cause the colors to turn brown!

P8120123Now I’ll add a bit of yellow to repeat the process from the previous vest piece. Notice that I’ve left quite a bit of white space all the way around the vest pieces.

P8120125Now for the fun part! Place some red paint onto the white areas remaining on the vest. Notice how the color changes from red to a soft pink. This is due to the addition of water that is diluting the color throughout the Color Diffusing material.

P8120128Now for the pockets! First I’ve added some yellow to random sections…

P8120130…Then, I’ve concluded with some red color around the sides.

P8120133Leave the Color Diffusing Paper to dry for about 15 minutes (even faster if placed directly under the sunlight!) For the next step, we will be assembling the pieces together using our Plastic Lacing Needles and some colorful yarn. Make sure you choose a yarn that complements the look of your vest!

P8120135First, thread the yarn through the needle hole. Widen the eye with your fingers to make it easier to slip the yarn through. Tie a knot at one end to make sure the thread doesn’t slide apart once it’s been stitched into the vest.

P8120139This is a very important part as it will help you to sew up your vest properly. The front panels and pockets match together in a particular way. Besides being placed in the center of the front panel, the pockets align with a certain arrangement of holes on either side. On one side, there are holes that are shaped like circles, and others that are shaped like x’s.

First, find out which way the front panel aligns on the back vest, then flip your pocket accordingly to match up with the same number of holes on either side. Since the paint colors the material on both sides, it’s no issue to flip the pockets when needed.

Slide your needle and thread through the first hole as shown the picture above.

P8120140Next, flip the direction of the needle and thread the opposite way and go through the next two holes to the other side.

P8120143Continue following the line of holes all the way around the pocket until you come to the end.

P8120145Flip over the vest and tie off the thread with a knot.

P8120148Start sewing one front panel to the back vest. There are four holes at the top shoulder that align with the holes of the back vest. Thread the yarn through these holes and tie off.

P8120154Additionally, secure the front panel to the side of the back vest. Thread the yarn through and tie off.

P8120157Repeat the same procedure for the opposite side. Your Sew Up Vest is almost complete!

P8120159Now it’s time to decorate the Sew Up Vest! You’ll notice that our Wild Flower Paper Bits are cut into sheets of decorative or full-color sheets of paper. You can make flower designs out of the variety of flower shapes, or use the petal/leaf pop-outs to make your own designs. There are two sizes of flower centers to add interest to your flower designs.

P8120160Rub a bit of glue onto the back of the flower shape.

P8120161Paste the flower shape onto the vest. I decided to decorate the pockets and make a “collar” out of a line of flowers.

P8120163Here you can see how I’ve mixed and matched the colors of the various leaf and flower shapes to make interesting designs. Isn’t it pretty? And ready to celebrate some summer fun with style!

Craft Spotlight: Flower Forms

2014-07-27-FeatureImage

Flower Forms are plastic flower bases with slots for threading through your own petal designs! Make your own chain of flowers or use to decorate hair bands or bracelets!

Flower Forms come in a variety of colors to match various different types of petals. They are sturdy enough to hold the shape of the flower form, but flexible enough to allow tiny fingers to manipulate and place petals through.

R2453

You can use either decorative papers, printed flower images, Color Diffusing Paper or tissue paper to form your petals. To decorate Color Diffusing Paper, drop some liquid watercolor onto the sheet. Watch the color expand across the sheet, then drop another color to see how they blend to create new colors! Leave the Color Diffusing Paper to dry overnight. You can use the colored sheet to cut out large peanut-shaped petals, or simply cut out from decorative paper.

Accordion fold the paper shape across so that it is thin enough to fit into the Flower Form slots. Slide one end of the folded shape into one slot, and thread out through the slot on the opposite end of the Flower Form.

Mother’s Day Crowns

2014-05-07-FeatureImage

Make Mom a queen for the day with these embellished R22025 Color In Crowns! Add details with collage materials and a few of our own fun craft products, such as R24560 Bouquet Paper and R15657 Wild Flower Paper Bits!

Age: 4+

Duration: 15 minutes

You’ll Need:

 • R22025 Color In Crowns

R24560 Bouquet Paper

R15657 Wild Flower Paper Bits

R5870 Linear Rubbing Plates

• Pipe cleaners

• Scissors

• Crayons

• Glue

• Sequins / Dollar store rhinestones

• Tape

• Pencil

• Ruler

• Strip of paper from 11 x 17″ sheet (28 x 43 cm)

Line-10

Mom will love to feel lavished with this beautiful, handmade crown. Choose mom’s favorite colors and combine printed paper flowers. Although you can embellish the crown with real flowers, you can use our life-like Bouquet Paper to add on flower combinations that will never wilt!

P1018830

The crowns come in a variety of different styles, so you don’t have to be limited by one type. In addition, each of the crowns features die-cut holes that can be popped out from the interior of the crown. These can be used to attach the bouquet flowers. I’ll show you more in the steps below!

P1018836

First we will rub a pattern onto the Color-In Crown. Flip the crown so that the non-glossy side faces down onto the rubbing plate pattern.

P1018838

Place the crown onto the rubbing plate. Rub the side of a crayon to help distribute the pattern evenly across the crown. Choose a color that will allow the pattern to really pop out! Darker colors work best, but here, I’ve used orange and it still managed to turn out nicely.

P1018840

All finished. How does that swirl pattern look?

P1018848

Next, we will create the flowers to decorate your Mother’s Day Crown. First, cut a length of pipe cleaner into quarters. These will be used as stems to hold the Bouquet Paper pieces together.

P1018852Pop out the pieces from the paper backing. The graphics are double-sided with different colors so you can easily alternate the design of your flowers.

P1018854

Grab a bunch of different petal colors, shapes and sizes. The Bouquet Paper includes leaf and center graphics.

P1018856

I’ll show you how to layer the various kinds of flowers I will make for the crown. First, choose a daisy-like flower with a red center and its twin with a yellow center.

P1018857

Each Bouquet Paper graphic features small nicks in the paper to help you thread pipe cleaner through. Thread one of the small pipe cleaner lengths through the yellow center.

P1018858

Continue to thread the pipe cleaner through the next flower until it sits perfectly on top of the first. Fan out the petals so that they alternate between dark orange and soft yellow. To secure, press the top of the pipe cleaner on its side like a hook.

P1018861For the next type of flower, choose a daisy-like flower with a yellow center, another similar flower with a reddish-orange center and a long thin flower with light pink petals. Thread the pipe cleaner through the reddish-orange flower first.

P1018862Next, thread the yellow centered flower behind the first.

P1018863Finish with the thin pink flower behind the first two. Press the top of the pipe cleaner down to hold the arrangement in place.

P1018870

You can make further variations of these flowers using other combinations.

P1018872

Choose the double-petal graphics in four different colors. I popped out an additional center for the final flower design.

P1018873

First, thread the pipe cleaner through the flower center. Bend the end of it to secure.

P1018877

Layer the rest of the petals behind the flower center. Fan them all out equally so you can clearly see the various colors.

P1018879

You can add dimension to the flowers to make them look even more realistic! These particular petals feature a score line along their length. Pinch the sides of the petal together to bend them inwards.

P1018885

What a neat lifelike effect!

P1018895

Now it’s time to decorate your crown!

P1018896Pop out the interior cutouts. These will be helpful for stringing through the flower designs.

P1018897

Thread the pipe cleaner stem of one flower through the popped-out opening.

P1018899

Flip the crown over to the opposite side. You will see where the rest of the stem is poking through. Tape it down to the back of the crown with tape.

P1018903

Thread the rest of the flowers through and tape down.

P1018904

Ta-DA! Already looking fashionable!

P1018906

Now for some details. I pasted large rhinestones in different colors on the tips of the crown arches.

P1018908

To give our crown a bit more flair, I’ve popped out various flowers from the Wild Flower Paper Bits sheets. There are over 1000 different flower pieces to choose from, so mixing and matching the various patterns is so much fun!

P1018910

Paste on the flower bits to cover up some empty spots.

P1018912

Instead of popping out the provided flower centers for the Wild Flower Paper Bits, I decided to press in some rhinestones for the centers. So flashy!

P1018926

Next, we will need to make the headband for the crown. Cut a strip of paper from the 11 x 17″ sheet. The strip will need to be about 1 1/2″ wide and 17″ long. Color in the paper strip headband with the same color of crayon you used to make the print.

P1018929

Tape the sides of the headband to the sides of the crown.

P1018932

Now would be a good time to measure the headband and see if needs to be cut at any shorter.

P1018934

Double up on tape to secure the band.

P1018943

And voila!! Ready for Mom to wear!

P1018947

Mom will be so excited! You can make crowns to celebrate any time of the year, or just to feel like royalty for one day!

Valentine’s Day Pop Up Cards

2014-02-05-FeatureImageGive your Valentine’s Day wishes a personal touch with R22052 Double Color Card Sheets! We’ll show you how to make your card pop out in a meaningful way!

Age: 5+

Duration: 10-15 minutes

You’ll Need:

R22052 Double Color Card Sheets

• White paper 8.5 x 11″

• Staple

• Pencil

• Pencil Crayon

• Scissors

Line-14

2014-02-05-Step01Assemble all the materials you’ll need. Start choosing colors for the hands, flowers, flower stems and flower petal centers.

2014-02-05-Step02Trace the outline of your hand onto the matte side of a Double Color Card.

2014-02-05-Step03Now, cut it out!

2014-02-05-Step04Select the colors for the flower stems and leaves.

2014-02-05-Step05Cut out basic stem and leaf shapes. Make as many as you wish! There’s no need to make the leaves or stems perfect; as long as you can cut long thin, tapered rectangles, and elongated teardrop shapes, you’ll have what you need to decorate the Valentine’s flowers.

2014-02-05-Step07Next, choose your flower colors! Once you’ve made your decision, randomly cut up the Double Color Card sheets into big or small square sections.

2014-02-05-Step08

Give the random square sizes to students so they can make different sizes of flowers. Let them draw the petals of the flowers any way they like! Cut out the flowers once they are all drawn. I recommend making about 3-5 flowers per bouquet.

2014-02-05-Step09Find the spot between each flower petal. Cut a straight line into the flower, stopping about ½” to 1″ away from the center.

2014-02-05-Step10

These cuts will be important for making the flower “pop!” Fold the petals up from the center of the flower. Pull some petals in front of others to make the flower look a bit dimensional.

2014-02-05-Step11

Glue a small circle into the center of each flower.

2014-02-05-Step12Here are some other flower ideas! You can see how the flowers are all made into different sizes. I decided to make the petals on the yellow flower different from the rest. Your students can experiment in the same way. Use scrapbook scissors to make a variety of decorative fringes on the edges of the flower petals.

2014-02-05-Flower-Animation

Glue each flower to the top of each flower stem. About halfway down the stem, glue on the petals.

2014-02-05-Step13

Loosely bunch the flower stems together. Spread a few of the flowers apart while keeping their stems together to make the combination look like a real bouquet. Once you are satisfied with the position of the flowers, staple the centers together.

2014-02-05-Step14

Place the stems between the forefinger and thumb of your handprint cutout.

2014-02-05-Step15Next, carefully bend or curve the four upright fingers over the flower stems. Dab glue to the underside of the fingertips. Press the fingertips onto the flower stems.

2014-02-05-Step16

Spread a bit of glue onto your white paper card. Paste the hand cutout onto the card.

2014-02-05-Step17

Finally, write in your personal message to your special someone!
