Why Kids Love Folding an Origami Dog Face
There's something magical about turning a flat square of paper into an animal. The origami dog face is instantly recognizable, and the steps are simple enough for young folders. Even better, the finished result is something kids want to keep, display, and make again.
Beyond the fun of it, origami builds real skills. Every fold strengthens fine motor control and sharpens focus. As a result, it's a mindful, screen-free activity that meets kids right where they are.
What You'll Need
One square of paper is all it takes! But the paper you choose makes a big difference in the experience and finished result. Here are the three Roylco origami papers we recommend:
Animal Origami Paper - (R15220)
This is our top pick. The Animal Origami Paper features over 12 bold, double-sided designs inspired by the animal kingdom. When you fold a dog face from paper that already looks like fur or animal print, the result is stunning. No markers or decorating needed — the paper does the work. Best of all, it's printed on ethically sourced paper with vegetable-based inks, making it as eco-friendly as it is beautiful.
Really Big Origami Paper - (R15208)
Brand new to origami? Then start here. Our Really Big Origami Paper measures 12×12" — much larger than a standard sheet — making every fold easier to see, handle, and crease. For teachers demonstrating to a whole group, this is especially useful. In addition, each sheet features one of 6 stunning double-sided Japanese-inspired designs, so the finished piece always looks display-worthy.
Colorful Craft Origami Paper - (R15204)
For a classic choice, look no further. These 5.75" squares are the traditional origami size, making them ideal for independent folding once kids have the hang of the steps. The solid, vibrant colors are satisfying to work with, and kids love adding their own details with markers after the fold. With 72 sheets per pack, this is the go-to option for classroom sets.
Not sure which to grab? All three work beautifully — simply choose based on your folder's age, experience, and setting.
How to Fold an Origami Dog Face: Step-by-Step
Grab your paper and let's get folding! We recommend the Really Big Origami Paper for first timers, or the Animal Origami Paper for the most impressive finished result.
Step 1: Place your square sheet flat on your surface with the colored or patterned side facing up.
Step 2: Flip the paper over so the colored or patterned side is now facing down. You should see the plain white side.
Step 3: Rotate the paper so it sits on one of its corners like a diamond, with a single point at the top.
Step 4: Fold the paper in half by bringing the top corner down to meet the bottom corner.
Step 5: Fold the triangle in half by bringing the right corner over to meet the left corner.
Step 6: Unfold the center fold you just made and lay it flat.
Step 7: Take the right corner and fold it downward so the point drops toward the bottom corner. This becomes the dog's right ear.
Step 8: Repeat on the other side. Take the left corner and fold it downward in the same way to create the dog's left ear.
Step 9: Take the bottom corner and fold it upward until it meets the center of the face. This forms the dog's snout.
Step 10: Take the back piece at the bottom and fold it underneath the front piece to tuck it out of sight and clean up the shape.
Step 11: Grab a marker or pen and draw on your face!

Origami Dog Face as a Classroom Activity
This fold works perfectly as a standalone lesson or as part of a broader unit. For example, teachers can connect the origami dog face to lessons on animals, Japanese art and culture, or mindfulness. Additionally, the fold fits easily within a single class period, making it simple to plan around.
For group demos, start with the Really Big Origami Paper. Hold it up and fold step-by-step while students follow along with their own sheets. Because of the oversized format, every crease stays visible from across the room.
